Jörg Friedrich studied architecture, Italian and art history in Perugia, Siena and Stuttgart (diploma in 1979). In 1982 he founded a joint office with Jürgen Böge, Ingeborg Lindner and Bernd Sammek, and since 1988 he has been running his own studio in Hamburg and Genoa. He has received numerous awards for his work, such as the Förderpreis NRW für junge Künstler, the Fritz-Schumacher-Förderpreis, a scholarship of the Deutsche Akademie Villa Massimo in Rome, the Staatspreis Thüringen und the Sächsische Staatspreis für Baukultur. Jörg Friedrich has realised theatre buildings in Berlin, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich, Nuremberg, Padua, Rome, Salzburg and Würzburg. He was appointed Professor in 1989 and has subsequently taught in Hamburg, Mendrisio, Genoa, Rome and – currently – in Hanover.
