Nuno Mateus was born in Castelo Branco, Portugal in 1961. He received a degree in Fine Arts from the Lisbon School of Architecture at Universidade de Lisboa (FAUTL), his Master of Science in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University in 1987 and his PhD in Architecture from FAUTL in 2013. He worked among others with Peter Eisenman in New York from 1987 until 1991 and with Daniel Libeskind in Berlin in 1991. Together with José Mateus he founded ARX Portugal Arquitectos in 1991. He was founding member and Director (from 2004 to 2007) of the Architecture Department at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL). He has received a number of teaching assignments from UAL, FAUTL, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya and Escola Superior Artística do Porto. His teaching characterises an ethical and open perspective on an international level.
