Prof. Werner Sobek
The German seal of quality for sustainable building: the DGNB certificate.
Werner Sobek was born in 1953. In 1987 he received his doctorate in Civil Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. From 1991 to 1994 he was Professor at the University of Hanover. In 1992 he founded Werner Sobek Consulting Engineers in Stuttgart. Since 1994 he has been Professor at Stuttgart University and since 2006, Chairman of the University Council of HafenCity University, Hamburg. In 2007 he was a visiting professor at Harvard University. Werner Sobek currently runs seven practices worldwide.
Werner Sobek is President of the German Society for Sustainable Building e.V. (DGNB). The remit of the German Society for Sustainable Building is to illustrate and support means and solutions for achieving sustainable building. This refers to the design of buildings as well as their construction and utilisation. The DGNB sees itself as a key organisation in Germany for the exchange of knowledge, for further education and for disseminating information to the public in this future-orientated field of the construction industry. Its main focus is the award of certificates for sustainable buildings.
